Stress is something we all have to deal with at one time or another. It is great when you have time to go to the spa or take a weekend retreat but that is just not always practical. Especially when stress happens at work, you need to find ways to relieve your stress during your ten-minute break or at lunch. Below are five proven ways you can relieve stress quickly while at work;

  1. Breathe Deep – Sit up straight with your eyes closed and one hand on your belly and breathe deeply. Inhale through your nose slowly, feeling the breath start in your abdomen and slowly working its way to the top of your head. Exhale through your mouth slowly reversing the process. Psychologist and Certified Life Coach Judith Tutin, Ph.D. says deep breathing relieves the effects of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering your blood pressure.
  2. Be Aware – “Slow down and take five minutes to focus on one of your senses with awareness,” Tutin says. While you are walking be aware of how your feet feel when they hit the ground or how the wind feels on your face. Enjoy the taste and the texture of each bite of food you eat. You will find yourself less tense when you focus on your senses.
  3. Listen to Music - “Research has shown that listening to soothing music can lower your heart rate, blood pressure and level of anxiety,” says Cathy Benninger, a nurse practitioner and assistant professor at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus. Benninger advises making a playlist of songs or even nature sounds (the ocean, birds chirping or water running over rocks in a creek) to listen to. Let your mind focus on the different melodies or sounds in your playlist. For some people it has proven more beneficial to rock out to more upbeat tunes while singing at the top of your lungs but depending on your work environment this might have to be done in your car at lunch.
  4. Start Moving Around – You do not have to run to accomplish this. All forms of exercise including walking and stretching exercises can help ease depression and anxiety by helping the brain release feel-good chemicals. Take a few trips up and down the stairs or take a quick walk around the block. Do some shoulder shrugs and a few minutes of stretching at lunch, I think you will be surprised how much better you it makes you feel.
  5. Be Grateful - “Being grateful for your blessings cancels out negative thoughts and worries,” says Joni Emmerling, a wellness coach in Greenville, NC. This is as simple as creating a list of things that are good in your life. Your child’s smile, something new at work you have mastered or a favorite hobby. Use this list when you start feeling stressed and remember the things that really matter in life.
