Not according to Kayla Martell. Kayla was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata in the fifth grade and soon lost all of her hair. This did not stop her from winning five local beauty pageants from 2006 through 2010. Kayla eventually competed in the Miss Delaware Pageant a total of five times.
There were some trying times on her journey, and she even considered quitting and focusing on college. After the 2009 Miss Delaware Pageant, one of the judges asked Kayla if she really wanted to be Miss Delaware. She told him yes – this has been her lifelong dream. The judge paused for a moment and told her, “You need to get a wig.” This really shocked Kayla and she started to question her dream. Then something special happened. While talking to a young girl named Lilliana, a young girl who also has alopecia, Kayla was inspired and given a new outlook. Kayla was explaining her plans to stop competing and focus on college and other plans when Liliana said, “Why? You are already my Miss America.” This really made Kayla think about Miss America as a sign of hope and a symbol of excellence. Kayla decided to compete and wear hair. In 2010, she won Miss Delaware while wearing hair enhancement.
In 2011, she became the first bald contestant in Miss America Beauty Pageant history and finished in the top ten. Kayla has shown everyone that wearing a hair enhancement prosthetic is not a hindrance but can enhance your appearance and help compete at the highest level. Kayla is now the official spokesmodel for Recover With Confidence and continually tours the United States with the National Women’s Hair Loss Seminar team.
